Ondine was founded in 1985 by Reijo Kiilunen, with the original aim of producing one live album at each season of the renowned Finnish Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival. Their fourth album featured Rautavaara’s opera Thomas, and it was this that attracted major international attention and opened the ground for overseas distribution. Since then, the label has steadily expanded and, in 2009, joined the international Naxos group as an independent unit. They have received numerous accolades, including prizes at the Gramophone Awards, BBC Music Magazine Awards and MIDEM Classical Awards. Rautavaara is heavily featured in their catalogue, alongside other highly regarded Scandinavian composers. Many great artists also feature, including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Leif Segerstam, Christoph Eschenbach, Sakari Oramo, Karita Mattila and Olli Mustonen.
