About

An inspiring collection of music for flute by female composers.

Emily Beynon is principal flautist of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, a much sought-after soloist, chamber musician, enthusiastic protagonist of new music, co-writer of ‘Flute Project: new pieces for flute solo‘ and writer of a new series of study books published by De Haske (The Netherlands).

Born in Wales, she began her flute studies as a junior at the Royal College of Music with Margaret Ogonovsky and then went on to study with William Bennett at the Royal Academy and with Alain Marion in Paris. In 2002 she was made a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music.

The spontaneous and friendly flautist panicked when she was asked to put together a programme for a ‘KCO First Chairs’ CD for Channel Classics. Her initial delight quickly turned to horror as she realised she would have to make a selection of just 70 minutes of music from the vast wealth of flute chamber music!

I temporarily toyed with the idea of selecting various British and Dutch composers thereby representing my own two homelands, until a colleague pointed out that as the only female principal wind player (currently!) in the orchestra, it might be a good opportunity to bring some lesser known works by female composers into the spotlight.

Discover the wealth of these sadly-forgotten works that were uncovered by Emily Beynon.
