About

Philippe Calvario only recently made his debut as a theatre director after 10 years acting at the Comédie Française. His direction of The Love for Three Oranges was his first opera staging. With admirable dash and panache, he moves his forces, very often to hilarious effect. The cheap stage constructions and the candy-coloured costumes fit perfectly with his slapstick approach. The sometimes sharp, burlesque music of Prokofiev invites an over-the-top approach. Stunning!

Tugan Sokhiev has established a strong presence as a guest conductor and took up the position as Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Adviser of the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse at the beginning of the 2005/6 season. A former student of Musin and later Temirkanov, he graduated from the St Petersburg Conservatoire in 2001. He made his Welsh National Opera debut in 2001 conducting La bohème, followed by a number of further productions, including a notable Eugene Onegin in Spring 2004. He was the object of much attention at the Festival in Aix-en-Provence in 2004 with The Love of Three Oranges for which he was acclaimed by the critics; a production he was also to conduct in Luxembourg (2005) and Madrid (2006).

"The heavenly surprise is in the pit, with an excellent Mahler Chamber Orchestra conducted by 27-year-old Russian, Tugan Sokhiev...[who] surprises with his mastery, fervour and virtuosity." Le Monde

"Tugan Sokhiev realises with great freedom and flexibility the colours and extraordinarily inventive rhythms of the orchestral genius [Prokoviev]...and looks after the singers with real stylistic flair." La Liberation

"The score is crisply punctuated, still recognisably Prokoviev, but he rounds off the rough edges, stressing Ravellian colour and the influence of Rimsky-Korsakov. The balance between pit and stage was faultless, allowing singers to present often thankless vocal lines with ease." Financial Times
