About

This is a world-premiere recording of the piano sonatas of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges. Born in Guadeloupe to an aristocratic plantation owner and a black slave, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (1745-1799) was one of the most enigmatic figures in 18th-century Paris.

A virtuoso musician, renowned fencer, and passionate advocate for equality, Saint-Georges was born in Guadeloupe as the son of a noble plantation owner and an enslaved woman. He became a key figure in the Parisian arts scene and is said to have influenced Mozart. He was one of the best violinists and one of the most popular composers in France, but also a heart throb, an excellent fencer and swimmer. In fact, his biography almost resembles that of a character from Bridgerton! He is sometimes referred to as the 'Black Mozart' (the composer recently became known through the biopic 'Chevalier', which celebrated great success on Disney Plus) and indeed is said to have influenced the great composer in his lifetime.

Pianist Jens Barnieck brings this fascinating music to life on a historic fortepiano from the Schiedmayer Foundation. In addition to three newly recorded sonatas, this album features selections from a collection of manuscripts attributed to Saint-Georges - some echoing his symphonies and melodies.
