[Papastefanou] describes her take on Allein Gott in der Hoh sei Her as ‘playing with Bach’, and that’s what she does: starting with a very fast running figure, she titles the tonality dangerously from side to side, setting melodies clashing with each other, and ending on an unapologetically triumphant jazz discord.
All in all, this is a fabulous album, wide-ranging in scope and mood, played with reverence and love for the music without resorting to indulgence. I am bowled over by her sense of colour and texture, with real clarity to the voicing; this is Bach playing of a high order.
