About

* Uruguay-born conductor José Serebrier continues his acclaimed cycle of symphonies by turn-of-the-century Russian mater Alexander Glazunov, praised on Classical Source.com as “lifting Glazunov out of second-rate status and revealing his (fifth symphony) to be one of the finer symphonies from 19th century Russia."

* Described by legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski as “the greatest master of orchestral balance” and a Grammy nominee 14 times, Serebrier became Associate Conductor of Stokowski’s American Symphony Orchestra in his early twenties, and has since conducted the world’s major symphony orchestras.

* Glazunov’s Fourth Symphony – a dramatic and vigorous work, the composition which defined the composer’s mature style.

* The Seventh is often nicknamed the “Pastoral” because of the resemblance of its opening to Beethoven’s 6th, although sleeve note author Andrew Huth declares the rest of the piece “the music of a sophisticated city-dweller.

* About Serebrier’s recording of Glazunov’s Eighth Symphony Ivan March in The Gramophone wrote “With its extended imitative development, it’s not an easy movement to hold at a high level of tension but Serebrier pins the rather discursive argument together quite firmly”…

* …for Edward Greenfield in The Guardian Serebrier “gave an exhilarating performance…With outstanding recorded sound giving clarity and weight, the refinement and power of the performance is superbly caught.” .

* Serebrier is joined by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Robert Maycock, writing in The Independent, recently characterised their appearance at The Proms as having “classical poise and tonal beauty that you’d scarcely believe.
